Changes - The 1959 Mental Health Act

Before the changes in the 1960s, some of them were so “high grade” that you really didn’t know what they were doing there.

John was there until he was in his mid-20s, and then he moved out and went to work in Greswolde Hotel, in the kitchens [early 1960s]. And there was no preparation, they were just sent out. I think that they were placed in bed and breakfast accommodation, and found a job. They were always the same ones, there was Greswolde and a few of the other hotels and Solihull Hospital and places like that, and then left to fend for themselves from then onwards. And I think that John really struggled with that time in his life.

Things developed really after 1961, the emphasis was on getting the people out, finding individual facilities for them. We developed Unit 1 and Unit 2 to give individual space, the emphasis was on that. And of course it was broken down into smaller living units, giving more personalisation.
